Francisco J Galarte

Francisco J. Galarte is Associate Professor of American Studies and Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at the University of New Mexico, where he also serves as Director of the Feminist Research Institute and Director of Graduate Studies in American Studies. He is the author of Brown Trans Figurations: Rethinking Race, Gender, and Sexuality in Chicanx/Latinx Studies (University of Texas Press, 2021). His scholarship moves across Chicanx/Latinx studies and transgender studies, with particular attention to race, gender, visual culture, and borderlands cultural production. A transfronterizo from California's Imperial Valley, Galarte's work is grounded in the cultural and political life of the U.S.-Mexico borderlands.
Aine McCarthy

Áine McCarthy started at UNM in 2020 as an advocate supporting student survivors on campus is now proud to be serving as Director. She previously worked at Upaya Institute and Zen Center in Santa Fe as co-director of the Professional Buddhist Chaplaincy Training Program. She is also an ordained Buddhist chaplain with a background in working with women in prison and offering creative and contemplative programming for women and femmes cultivating post-traumatic growth after Intimate Partner Violence. (For more on this, check out this short documentary film by Healing Voices-Personal Stories, “Through the Door—Movement, Meditation, and Healing.”) Áine holds a B.A. from Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT and completed the Living School at the Center for Contemplation and Action in Albuquerque. She’s currently pursuing her M.F.A. in Creative Writing at UNM. Her other passions include goofy dance moves, reading tarot cards, and starting rounds of applause.

I am an award-winning intersex scholar-activist whose research, teaching, and activism are at the intersection of institutional violence and feminist theories. Among other scholarly contributions that appeared in outlets ranging from Ms. Magazine to the American Journal of Bioethics, I am the author of Contesting Intersex: The Dubious Diagnosis. My new book is a cultural memoir entitled Five Star White Trash which is about medical, familial, and criminal fraud. I am also a former board president of interACT: Advocates for Intersex Youth and a past-president of InterConnect Support Group.
