FRI Faculty Research Grant CFP:

The Feminist Research Institute is now accepting applications for Faculty Research Grants. Grants of up to $1,500 will be awarded in Fall 2021. These annual grants are intended as “seed money” to support Feminist, Queer, Transgender, Critical Race, Black, Latinx, Asian American and Critical Indigenous Studies scholarship focused on the study of gender and/or sexuality. Funds may be requested for research trips, supplies, graduate assistant stipends or other research expenses.

Junior faculty are encouraged to apply for funding to support publication costs, such as copyright permissions, copyediting, developmental editors, and indexers.  They are not intended to support conference travel or stipends for the applicant.  

Proposals for interdisciplinary projects are particularly welcome, and junior faculty are especially encouraged to apply.  Only full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty are eligible.

This year the FRI encourages proposals that focus on community based research, and research in partnership with locally based community organizations.  

Proposals for research about or in collaboration with gender and sexuality focused groups outside the United States will be considered for the Susan Geiger award, which is given in memory of 1997 Feminist Research Institute Visiting Scholar and University of Minnesota Professor Susan Geiger.

Applications are due April 26, 2021 by 5:00 PM MST. Please submit the materials listed below in order electronically as one PDF file or .doc/x Word file to Alana Bock at femresin@unm.edu.

Applicants should submit the following required materials in a single computer file (.doc/x or .pdf, please) in the following order:

1. A cover page with current contact information (department affiliation, campus mail address, e-mail address, and telephone number).
2. A two-page proposal that clearly explains, in non-specialist language, the focus of the research project, its theoretical/methodological groundings in feminist/LGBT/Queer/Queer of color literature; its connection to FRI's mission, and how the funds will be used to advance your work (single-spaced, 12-point font).
3. A brief CV.
4. A detailed budget that outlines research and/or travel expenses. Please indicate other funding sources pursued (pending or awarded)

Research travel for spring applicants should be completed by June 30, 2022. All travel reimbursements must be submitted within 15 days after returning. Each awardee will be required to give a public talk on their research the semester after it is completed and will be asked to acknowledge the FRI in any talks, papers, and/or projects that this grant helped to foster. FRI Graduate Student Research Grant CFP: 

The Feminist Research Institute accepts applications for graduate student research and travel grants in the spring semester. Grants of up to $1000 each will be awarded in Spring/Summer 2021. These small grants are intended to support Feminist, Queer, Transgender, Critical Race, Black, Latinx, Asian American and Critical Indigenous Studies scholarship focused on the study of gender and/or sexuality. The grants may be used to support travel expenses and materials related to research projects, but may not be used for travel to conferences and research presentations.

Research for applicants should be completed before the end of the academic year following notice of the award. Grant monies will in most cases be made available in advance of research travel, and awardees must supply a brief report and relevant receipts within 15 days after returning. Each awardee will be asked to give a public talk on their research the semester after the FRI-sponsored activity, or as soon as convenient for awardee and FRI.

Proposals for interdisciplinary projects are particularly welcome, and master’s and doctoral students in any UNM graduate program are welcome to apply.

Applicants should submit the following materials in a single file in this order (.doc/x or .pdf, please):

1. A cover page with current contact information (department affiliation, degree status, campus mail address, e-mail address, and telephone number)
2. A two-page proposal that clearly explains, in non-specialist language; the focus of the research project; its theoretical groundings in Feminist, Queer, Critical Race, or Critical Indigenous research; its connection to FRI's mission; and how the funds will be used to advance your work (single-spaced, 12-point type)
